«CABARET» BASED ON CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD’S BERLIN STORIES | LANDESTHEATER EISLEBEN | CHOREOGRAPHY BY ROMEO SALAZAR

The premiere of the musical “CABARET” by Joe Masteroff (script), John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics), based on the “Berlin Stories” by Christopher Isherwood, on September 28. 2025.

The premiere at the Eisleben Theater was met with a standing ovation from the audience. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Berlin, the production resonates as a bold and self-assured opening to a new chapter for the theatre. Under the direction of Frank Martin Widmaier, the production unfolds with a confident sense of dramaturgical clarity, seamlessly navigating between intimate moments and larger theatrical gestures, and shaping a dense, pulsating stage experience. The stage and costume design by Patricia Walczak creates a compelling visual language, balancing reduction with sensual richness, and framing the narrative with striking clarity.
Berlin in 1929 reveals itself as a liminal space of excess and fragility — a world defined by intoxicating freedom, shifting moralities, and an unrelenting hunger for artistic expression. This tension is rendered palpable in Cabaret, brought to life through the captivating choreography of Romeo Salazar and the finely tuned musical direction of Melchior Walther and Sebastian Undisz.
