About

Patricia Walczak

As a Production Designer, Costume Designer, and Freelance Artist since 2004, she graduated with distinction in Stage Design from Prof. Rosalie at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main. Her professional journey has taken her across Germany, Poland, France, and Austria.

She has collaborated with renowned film companies such as 20th Century Fox, Polyphone, TeamWorx, Ziegler Film, Soilfilms, Kundschafter Film, Razorfilm, SWR, ZDF, HR, WDR, NDR, and ARTE. The films she has contributed to have received prestigious accolades, including the Golden Lion in Venice, the Bavarian Film Award, the German Television Award, the Jupiter Award and the Best Production Design Award at the BATSFF Festival in the USA.

Her theatrical portfolio includes work with esteemed venues like Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Opera National de Montpellier in France, Music Theatre in Gdynia Poland, Theater Münster, Brandenburger Theater, and Theater an der Wien.
Notable recent projects encompass the stage and costume design for “Carmen” by Georges Bizet at Theater an der Wien/Kammeroper, stage and costume design for “Mein Freund Bunbury,” a musical by Gerd Natschinski at Brandenburger Theater, and costume design for the world premiere of the Krautrock symphony “Grossmutter.Lear – Epilog” by Regina Schulte am Hülse in collaboration with Volksbühne Berlin 2023.

In 2018, she participated in a workshop for production designers with the legendary Polish production designer Allan Starski.

Her latest endeavors include the production design for Germany’s most famous TV crime series, TATORT “Hüter der Schwelle,” a fiction movie “King of Ravens,” and costume design for the TV movie “My girlfriend Volker,” where Axel Milberg portrays a unique role as a drag queen.

In 2022, Patricia Walczak was honored with a scholarship from the German Federal Government for Culture and Media and the Stiftung Kulturwerk Bild-Kunst, working on an art project titled “The Beauty of Being Different.” Grounded in the open question “What is beauty?” she collaborated with individuals facing prejudices or disadvantages for various reasons, developing ideas for their self-presentation and visualizing them in specially crafted costumes. This expanded the significance of costume design under a changing understanding of diversity, identity, and the associated perception of self and others. Tableaus were created, navigating between perceived normality and supposed peculiarity, requiring both the protagonists and viewers to find new orientations.

One of her projects this year is the costume design for the ARD Degeto drama series “Made in Germany.” Narrated diversely and shedding light on various aspects of post-migrant experiences, this project produced by Studio Zentral dedicates each episode to a new main character from a different cultural background. What makes this project exciting is its subversion of stereotypes, breaking down barriers, and advancing societal dialogue about origin, identity, and equal opportunities.
